CS2 Tara Werling, 30, hails from Indiana and has proudly served in the Navy for five years. After her initial station aboard the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), she has spent the past three years in the Hampton Roads area, currently serving in food service at CNRMA. In her role, she and her team oversee inspections of local galleys, ensuring top-notch standards and financial management. 

Tara is passionate about her service and even more so about her 3-year-old daughter. During her time off, she cherishes every moment spent with her. As both a Sailor and a single mother, she deeply appreciates the support the Navy provides through programs like FFSP, CYP, and MWR. 

“I love the variety of programs available for families,” Tara shared. “As a mom, I find family advocacy particularly helpful. It’s a great way to learn about the area, including schools and childcare. There are always opportunities for my daughter and me!” 

Tara takes full advantage of MWR family events, such as the NSAHR Halloween event and the popular one-dollar Wednesday bowling nights, which she and her daughter thoroughly enjoy. Reflecting on her Navy experience, Tara noted, “The biggest thing I’ve learned in the Navy is how to create your own family that’s not just by blood. I’ve made great friends while serving, and they’ve become my support system as a mom and a Sailor.” 

Her advice for those considering joining the Navy is straightforward: “Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way." 

While Tara is grateful for her Navy experience, she faces the challenge of potentially leaving due to her caregiving responsibilities. She hopes to transition to a DOD civilian role or a contracting position in the future, allowing her to continue supporting the troops.
